Marrianne (Maz) Mercer studied at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University to gain a degree in Graphic Design and Advertising in 2005. From there she moved back to Kent to start her career as a graphic designer. She now works as a designer for a book publisher and enjoys making handmade beaded jewellery at weekends.
Paddington, Westminster
Leigh County Primary School and Hillview School for Girls. I then went to West Kent College and completed a BTEC Diploma in Fine Art before gaining a degree in Graphic Design and Advertising from Buckinghamshire Chilterns Uni.
I was made redundant from a Graphic Design job and thought about a career change. I did a day course in beaded jewellery and got hooked!
Approximately 3 years.
Several different websites, shops and markets, but also from family and friends button boxes.
I actually work at Search Press as a book designer!
Eeek, can I make jewellery using buttons? I'll give it a try!
Not really, or at least not yet! I don't feel famous but I do feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to write about something that I love doing so much. Doing some demonstrations for Hobbycraft has definately made me busier in my spare time!
Shop around and look at others for inspiration. Obviously buy my book(!) as I explain things simply and have added some easy to follow diagrams for the tricky bits. Also start off with simple projects to get used to using the tools. Earrings are usually really easy.
I don't really have one, all of my tools are important to be able to make jewellery easily. My bead mat is probably the most important as it stops the materials rolling away!
No, I haven't been crafting that long really and luckily buttons and beads are part of everyday life, so I don't have to go far for them!
I love colour and pattern so I just look at button and bead shapes that really capture my imagination. I do try to be original with my ideas, or adapt others to my own style.
