Jera Brandvig worked in the biotech industry before becoming a best-selling quilting author and fabric designer. Jera lives in the Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle with her husband and two boys.
An Interview with Jera Brandvig
Where were you born?
Manila, Philippines. But I moved to Seattle, Washington when I was 2 years old.
What is your educational background?
I majored in environmental science at the University of Washington (Go dawgs!)
What first got you interested in craft?
My mom used to sew my brother and I pajamas when we were little, so I was always playing with her sewing things. When I was older I got into scrap-booking. However, as soon as I walked into a fabric shop and got hit with the quilting bug, quilting has been my top craft, end of story!
How long have you been crafting?
I’ve been quilting for about ten years now.
Where do you get your materials?
I’m a fan of Fiskars rotary cutters and mats, and I use a Pfaff sewing machine. Everything else I will buy if it’s adorable and cute, lol! For example, I collect pins and cute embroidery scissors.

What were your first thoughts when asked to write a book?
Hell yes!
Has publishing a book changed your life in any way?
Indeed it has! It was at a book signing when I was approached by Lecien Fabrics, whom I’ve now designed two fabric collections for!
Any tips for beginners?
Don’t be intimidated, as quilting doesn’t have to be as daunting as it seems!
What is your favourite craft tool?
My 60 mm Fiskars rotary cutter. I use it to cut through layers of batting for my quilt as-you-go projects, and I use it to cut fabric too!
Have you travelled for your craft?
Yes, to Houston for Fall quilt market, or wherever Spring quilt market is being held at the time.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I draw my inspiration from vintage china pieces and antique quilts. In fact, my first fabric collection is called High Tea and was inspired from vintage, mismatched china dishes.
