As someone who does a fair amount of crafting, Christmas crafting is something I really struggle with and I feel everything I do just looks amateurish.

Paper Christmas has some really excellent ideas to make Christmas less commercialised and more personal.

As always with Search Press books, there are clear colour photos showing each stage of the projects, a list of useful equipment is provided and there is a really good explanation on the different types of paper/card available and their best usage.

There is a good variety of projects from Christmas cards and tags up to Christmassy scenes and includes items to make to ensure your Christmas party is unique and personalised. There is something for all abilities and the more experienced crafter could adapt the patterns to come up with more advanced creations.

My one criticism would be that some of the templates are not full size, not everyone has easy access to a photocopier or scanner to enlarge them

All Things Paper

We're a bit overdue in celebrating Christmas in July, but the dog days of August are just as good a time to get a jump on holiday crafting. Luckily, British paper crafter Emily Dawe's brand new book for Search Press, Paper Christmas, was recently released on this side of the Pond and it's chock full of stylishly simple ways to do just that.

The book begins with an introduction followed by essential information about papers, materials and tools, techniques, and basic tips. The projects are divided into categories - Gift-Giving, Decorations, and Festive Fun. You'll be cutting, gluing, heat embossing, glittering, and humming Christmas carols in no time!

Many of the projects are ideal for beginners and most can be enjoyed by children. I suspect teachers, after school minders, and scout leaders will happily turn to Emily's ideas come autumn.

Get ready for the festive season with sixteen papercraft projects. Deck the halls, adorn gifts, craft cards and get party ready with hats and table decorations all you need is paper and some craft supplies.

If you are a papercrafting novice you can learn quite a few techniques with this book: using embossing powder, adding glitter, book folding, marbling, simple origami and kirigami. A beginner will be able to tackle all of these thanks to the clear instructions but they are unlikely to own a Cricutfortunately pretty much all the fancy cutting can also be done by hand. The book starts with looking at different types of paper, showing how to find the grain and what else you require to tackle the projects. It depends what you want to make and/or have a go at what you will buy and the author helpfully talks a bit about each item. Before the projects there is a short section on paper basics such as making a square, working with double-sided tape, scoring and folding. The projects are divided into three sections: gifts and their packaging, decorations and festive fun ie anything else. Make cards and tags, marble your own wrapping paper, hang up bunting and a novel advent calendar, decorate your table with favor cones and put on some party hats. Many of the techniques and patterns can be adapted for other uses so gift tags become a garland, paper bird decorations become tags and advent houses turn into tealight holders. Instructions are clear and involve plenty of staged photographs as well as a large picture of the finished item in situ. Turn to the back for all the templates which are mostly full sized apart from the advent house nets. Once the techniques have been learned I can imagine a whole world of papercrafting will open up for the newbie, and although it doesnt say beginner in the title this book is suitable for one, or for anybody else in need of a few new ideas. A lovely book that shows what fun papercraft can be.

A lovely, well illustrated book for the beginner and expert alike. Lovely colour photographs grace each page and each project has a recipe and descriptive text and photos, which are very easy to follow. Super full sized templates at the back of the book are an added bonus. Lots of different papercrafts are covered including origami, diecutting, rubber stamping and paper marbling. Highly recommended!

Excellent book for all ages to papercraft for the festive season. Beautifully illustrated and photographs with ideas and techniques and tips and also also projects to try. The author shows how to achieve christmas projects from cards to gift tags and decorations.

Amazed at the full size templates to copy and use again and again. Will definitely use with grandchildren this year and years to come. Well worth the purchase price. Would recommend to family and friends.

Customer Review

I really enjoy crafting but I am a complete novice. I was slightly concerned that this book would included complication instructions and diagrams but my worries disappeared when the book arrived. The diagrams and instructions are clear and the photo's were lovely and colourful. There are so many projects that I can't wait to try and I eagerly look forward to Christmas I can't wait to try and make the Advent houses as they look adorable and the wrapping paper ideas were great too! I would recommend this book as I think it includes something for everyone.

I really enjoy paper-crafting and this book was full of inspiring projects and helpful hints. It has full colour photographs throughout with detailed tutorials on how to do each project. I haven't done any of the projects yet but I think my first ones will be the advent project and the shaving foam marbling gift paper. I have a granddaughter who will enjoy making some of these projects with me. The projects are suitable for beginners up. It has a good range of templates, one for each project in the book if they need one. Most of them are full size which is excellent. Only a few are not but you could easily just use them at that size and make a slightly smaller project piece. Overall, a beautiful, inspiring book that will fit neatly into any crafters library.

The step by step guides are really useful and there are instructions on how to make things from tags to bunting to book Angels.

This book is so lovely and has some amazing ideas. There are things I can make with my two kiddies and things that mummy can do when kiddies are in bed and I get to play about on my own which are a bit more intricate.

Customer Review

When I first received this book I noticed how colourful and detailed it was. On looking through the pages there are plenty on projects to choose from and very simple easy to follow instructions. I cant wait to start on a few of the projects with my daughter who loves crafts.
