Techniques and projects for cute fashion accessories by Hiroko Kubota
Five years ago, Japanese embroidery artist Hiroko Kubota’s embroidered cat shirts set the internet alight. Hiroko uses a technique that lets you 'paint with thread'. It requires a small needle, single strands of embroidery floss plus lots of shades of the same colour, and two stitches one bigger than the other that repeat again and again. This adorable collection of five projects, core techniques, and templates lets you recreate Hiroko’s magic.

Hiroko Kubota is a Japanese embroidery artist of extraordinary talent. At her son’s request, she began embroidering shirts with cats, mostly peeking out from a breast pocket. After posting pictures of the shirts online, her work went viral, and the rest is history. See more of Hiroko’s work at Instagram @hiroko_embroidery.
Stitching cats on to clothes started with a request from her son, became a viral sensation, and now reaches you in book form. Japanese embroiderer, Hiroko Kubota generously shares how colours, shades and layers of thread can be built up to achieve life-like results. There's a whole range of cats to stitch, each with their own personality and iron-on transfer. You'll find plenty of images, including close-ups, matched with detailed instructions explaining what's involved at each stage. Particular attention is paid to creating fur and developing the eyes, which really bring the portraits alive. You'll also get ideas on how to display your stitched feline friends for best effect. Love cats? Love embroidery? Then this is a match made in heaven
This is a really lovely book. Will definitely inspire you to have a go. Excellent instructions, beautiful pictures and the added bonus of transfers to make life easier. Every section of each project is clearly explained together with stitching techniques and suggestions as to what you will need to complete it. In my view if you are a beginner, like me, or more experienced in embroidery, this is a brilliant purchase. Enjoy it, (I am).
This book is really lovely and so informative. The cats are drawn in fantastic detail and there are templates to do 10 cat projects. The really comprehensive step-by-step instructions include picture steps as well as suggestions to use alternative threads so you can create your own feline. The instructions are so detailed and include how to care for your work once it is finished - e.g. washing and fabric thread care. I would recommend this book to all embroidery and cat enthusiasts.
Lovely book for a cat lover like myself. The designs are super cute and really detailed. The templates are lovely and the sheets in the back are really helpful. The cats are absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to embroider them onto things.

Every cat lover will just adore this book. And if you're an embroiderer then your in for a real treat.
These designs are beautiful, they are small, perfectly sized projects to decorate and adorn clothing, accessories and home wear.
The book has 10 projects with two sheets of templates to help you get perfect results. Stitch techniques, colour advice and dimensions help with detail, along with step-by-step instructions and beautiful photography.
Each cat is perfect. I loved the textured look of each design, and each stitch detail brings them to life beautifully.
This book really is stunning.
When Hiroko Kubota began making her son's clothes, he asked if she could embellish them with a cat, and thus began her love affair with embroidery, and 'the warmth, personality and individuality of handcrafted products'.
Cat in My Pocket demonstrates how to embroider 10 original cat portraits for clothing and bags. Iron-on transfer templates are included, along with step-by-step instructions and detailed photography (you'll need a magnifying glass). Be prepared to blend lots of different threads (between 30 and 50) in similar shades, using long and short, and satin stitches. These projects are advanced - time and patience are required but experienced embroiderers will enjoy the challenge, whilst others will learn a lot. Hiroko brings her wisdom and experience to share in this sweet book, which at £12.99 is exceptional value.
